Project Objectives: How to Define Project Objectives in Project Planning and Management
Every project needs a roadmap with clearly defined goals in order to achieve success. Such goals/objectives need to be defined carefully after assessing various limitations within the project and also considering all stakeholders benefiting from the outcome of the project. It is important for the Project Manager to set clear objectives to guide team members. While setting up the objectives, one needs to sort out the difference between objectives with aims, goals and targets. Generally, aims and goals are related to one’s aspirations whereas objectives are the real battle plan. The suitable definition of project objectives leads to successful planning.
Also, the objectives need to be achievable and realistic. This is the stage of the planning that demands one to be realistic about who’s going to do it? Do they have (or can they get) the skills to do a good job? Where’s the money coming from? There’s no point in starting a job knowing one can’t finish, or one where one can’t tell if or when one has finished it. Achievable is something theoretically possible, availability of necessary resources or a realistic chance of getting them and also, proven track record of others done is successfully.
We need to ensure that the project objectives are measurable as well. It is the evidence that the objectives have been achieved. It gives the method to record successes and failures in project plans. If there is no deadline then objectives are not measurable. At the same time, deadlines must be realistic as well. Finally, the objectives and goals created in the project planning phase should be defined in simple language to help team members to know and understand the same.
